DIY: Tie Dye

As you might have already noticed, we have a style that’s standing out this season: the tie dye effect. It’s the result of a very entertaining technique, that we think can be interesting to try at home. This way you’ll be able to jump on the trend and on a budget. Try this DIY activity with your loved ones as it’s a nice and fun way to spend some time and get stylish clothing pieces. It’s also really easy, so even kids can do it under adult supervision. Today, we’re going to show you 2 different techniques of tie dye, just pick one (or both!) and enjoy the process. Thank us later ;).

Before starting, you need to know some basics. First of all, you need to get a tie dye kit, you can easily find it on Amazon, for example. Secondly, for a regular tie dye, you need to wash the piece or clothing pieces before starting the process, especially if it’s new; then leave it damp. For the reverse tie dye, though, you’ll need your item dry and a reverse tie dye kit or bleach.

We also recommend you to cover the flat area where you’re going to perform the tie-dye, as well as using gloves, to make sure your hands are protected too.

The Spiral

This technique is very popular and for sure you have seen it on the Internet before. For this first one, we recommend you to use a regular white t-shirt from Gildan because of its amazing quality. You can buy as many as you want as its price is reduced. You can also purchase in bulk, if you want to use this technique at the school or a summer camp.

  1. To start the process, if you’re looking for a central spiral, you have to make an imaginary cross from the center of the neckline to the bottom of the shirt, and then, from side to side (horizontally) right where the sleeve ends, the area that corresponds to the armpit. The central point you get making that cross, it’s the point where you’re going to pinch the fabric and twist into a swirl.
  2. Once it’s tight enough, grab three rubber bands and place them strategically over the t-shirt to make sure it doesn’t lose its shape.
  3. Now you can get your dye colors and place them combined between each other in every separated section by the rubber bands. Don’t forget to flip it and do the other side too.
  4. Finally you can place it into a plastic bag, or cover it in plastic for around 6-8 hours.
  5. Now you can remove the plastic and the rubber bands and watch your spiral!

Reverse tie dye

For this process, you’ll need a 100% cotton black t-shirt. We suggest this basic Gildan Ultra Cotton that will meet your dye expectations for sure!

  1. First of all, for this one, we need the t-shirt to be completely dry. Crumple it tight with some rubber bands to get the desired result.
  2. Get your reverse tie dye kit or bleach and apply it with an applicator preferably over the shirt, on both sides. Let it set and wait until you see the intensity you want in the effects of your shirt.
  3. If you used the bleach to get that trendy orangy color, you’re finished, but, if you used the reverse tie dye kit, you might now have some white areas that you can dye with a regular tie dye kit. To do it, you have to wash the t-shirt and leave it damp to repeat the process we saw previously.
  4. Once you have applied the colors, again, introduce the t-shirt in a plastic bag and let it dry.

You can also try both techniques we just showed you with a hoodie or a sweatshirt.

Now you know how to make the best of some spare time with your family or friends, though it’s an activity you can easily include for a group of people of any kind. We guarantee that they’ll have fun no matter the age. At Needen we encourage you to try! Visit Needen.com and get your basics to get the nicest tie dye and the best quality!
