DESCRIPTION & SERVICES MAP / LOCATION

Top level of 4 level / only 3 unit loft converted warehouse building. It is truly unique to the area (The building was originally a turn of the century boot factory and it is not at all a common type structure for this Plateau district, which features mostly duplexes and triplexes of typical apartment configurations). This unit was initially designed as my own personal living loft in the late 1980’s, but it still has great cachet and flair and even today it shows as remarkably chic and modern.

Total living space is approximately 1700 square feet plus an additional 400 sq ft of roof terrace and gardens just off the kitchen. The loft has an East facing wall of windows : actually 7 in all, totaling 40 feet by 9 feet high of sheer window. Like living outside this loft has so much light. On the West side the entrance to the loft actually comes in on the second floor. It is an area about 10 x 20 feet : a really nice large and impressive entrance. A curved staircase in marble and iron leads up to the main 3rd floor loft space. In the stairwell there is a grand window 4 feet wide by about 16 feet high intersecting the second and third floors. The West side also has patio French doors and a very private round balcony on the landing of the 3rd floor (see info above). This is an “open space concept Loft” but has 2 fully closed bedrooms.

Presently the loft has two huge Benjamin trees and other greenhouse plants overflowing mostly from the open sided kitchen above the main living area. Bit of a greenhouse effect I suppose. Either the cleaning lady or I will attend to plant watering and care on a weekly basis : persons with black thumbs need not worry.

Living room and Dining room : are one open combined area, on one half of the loft area at the entrance of the 3rd floor staircase. The living room also has a floor to ceiling ceramic combustion unit fireplace with heatilator vents. The entire loft has custom wide plank hardwood maple floors. The ceilings are exceptionally high at 12 feet everywhere. Lighting throughout is with dimmer controls. I am a fanatic for this feature I must admit : even my bathrooms have dimmers.

The Bathroom : is in the center of the loft area : it is quite grand in size and style. Irregular in configuration and approximately 250 square feet. The bathroom has marble floors, curved walls on almost all sides, a large whirlpool bath, also curved glass walls, a discrete closet with full size washer and dryer, and also a closeted toilet area (Another of my design must haves : who wants to look at a toilet if you don’t have to?). There are also two 8 feet high his and hers toiletry closets, two pedestal sinks, and a ceramic tile shower in green marble with heat lamps. Two entrances (one from the master bedroom and one from the hallway) allow a nice feeling of flow of the space and the bathroom itself. There is also a large convectair heater for comfort.

The Kitchen : is right above the bathroom and almost the same size configuration (about 200 sq ft). As it extends out of the roof one side is almost 20 feet high in ceiling height: the ceiling also has 3 large 4 feet square skylights for great luminosity plus a North facing huge roof level window. The kitchen is complete with stainless appliances (fridge, AEG dishwasher, and oven) and ceramic range cook top.

Roof Terrace : From the Kitchen you have direct access to the roof terrace. This is in an L shape on the North and West sides facing the Cathedral. A 4 feet high wall exterior privacy fence gives the terrace a nice almost perfect privacy, but the terrace still has wonderful all side views of the city. The terrace wall fences are complete with combo box benches and planters which are usually planted annually with white geraniums and perennial old garden roses. The terrace deck and fence wood are stained in teak varnish for a warm and rich effect with trims in white details and accessories. The terrace is complete with large stainless barbecue, lounge, and a table and chairs for 4 to 6 persons, plus a privacy shower. Two white umbrellas complete the look.

Bedrooms : both are around 15 feet by 12 feet large ! The main bedroom is furnished in a 1960’s bedroom set of veneer teak colored wood, with a 3 piece lighting set of 60’s style teak Aimes boomerang style floor and desk lamps. There is a double bed in the main bedroom set and one queen size bed in the guest bedroom. Both bedrooms also have plenty of closet and dresser facilities and telephone jacks.

Furnishings and Décor : This loft has a really eclectic mix of furniture and accessories. As my original personal loft this space has a time accumulation of style and design. There is I admit, a wild mix of 60’s and 70’s furniture finds like the orange “Banana” Couches, “Jetson” fur wing arm chair, amoeba glass and iron coffee table, pendan ball lights, a teak 50’s style dining room set, and thrown in are old period pieces like the 200 year old antique desks. Even marble tin lamps from Mexico got mixed in just because they were so colorfully cool. Believe me this is a wild mix : but it somehow all works nicely together in this space. I accumulated all this over the years prior to offering this as a furnished rental property so I suppose it was a controlled process of collectivity. Creative types love this loft. I have rented often to set designers and costume designers who have been working on movies stationed in Montreal. Even a name actress or actor has felt at home in this loft (Sorry names must remain nameless on the web to provide privacy for some wonderful guests who have lived in my loft properties). One rental agent, who books this location frequently for me, refers to it affectionately as her “Funky Loft”.

Around the Area : Everything you could want is literally within a few blocks of this location. The Plateau is now considered to be the most desired living area in Montreal : for the upwardly mobile : lots of “cachet” and very alive even well into the evening. Montreal is considered one of the safest cities in North America : The streets of the Plateau are full of people well into the night. All around the area, you can find restaurants, bistros, boutiques, and stores of all sorts. Also, unique to the area are “bring your own wine” restaurants : wonderful really in that you can go to the wine store (which is only in the next block!) and buy a nice or great bottle of wine or even Champagne? and take it to any of many fine restaurants for a great inexpensive but memorable dining experience. The area has numerous fine “French” style bistros as well as Greek, Italian, Thaï, and even Indian establishments that will accept bring your own wine dining.

Parks & Recreation / Gyms, etc. : 5 short blocks East on Rachel is Park Lafontaine : A wonderful large park which features a small lake and even presents live open air shows and concerts during the summer months! Or go West on Rachel the same short distance and you have the renowned park “Mont Royal”. Actually Montreal is named for this mountain park : cycle, walk, jog, cross country ski, or just visit the lake on the top and have wonderful views of the main city below from various vantage points. If you look on a map of Montreal you will see how huge this park really is.

Health Facilities : There are a number of gyms all within a few blocks of the loft, most with extensive equipment and facilities. Yoga and other specialty classes are also in the general vicinity. I also have a “around the area” Word doc that is left to all visitors on arrival, to help them find the various basic living amenities which can assist them during their stay (pharmacies / groceries / post office, etc.).

Transport / parking, etc. : A car is really not necessary considering the location which is only two short blocks away from the Mont-Royal Metro (subway) station.
No need to call a cab either as just at the very corner is St. Denis Street where you can hail a cab in a minute or less, at any time of the day or night. Visitors with cars can have free parking on half of the street in designated sections (half of the street is appropriated for non permit cars). Parties staying for extended periods can also purchase an inexpensive city permit for the immediate area which allows you full access to the entire street not just the open to free non permit parking areas.
Winter parking : there is an outside parking lot at the corner that is available by the month at $90 Cdn for persons optioning to store or not use their cars if they so wish ? Also : a few blocks away there is an underground parking usually available, if desired, for storing vehicles in the winter months. Some visitors prefer this in December or January and February especially.

Getting Around the City or further : Downtown is only 5 minutes away by cab or similarly by metro from Mont-Royal metro station which is only two blocks away from the loft (similarly to Old Montreal, the Harbourfront, Westmount or the Village : almost all sections of the city can be a easy 20 or 30 minute metro ride). The Bus Station is literally only 5 or so short blocks away, or you can have a 5 minute cab ride to the main Train Station downtown.
